The sound coming through headphones is absolutely fine but I. As those who have the headphones me know the headphone comes as an attachment which may be where the issue lies. When it ends, then enter aplay test-mic.wav to see if the sound was picked up properly. Recently received a pair of turtle beach 500 recon headphones, at first everything seemed to work fine however the microphone doesn’t seem to be working. Ok, so I cant speak on Skype because the mic automatically turns to mute in my computer settings, and when I do uncheck Mute, Skype says my mic is having problems. Speak into the headset mic during this time. I use Skype and Zoom on a daily basis for work and now can no longer use my laptop for these calls. It's really stressing me out!! I have spent probably 15 hours at this point reading message boards and trying different things. With the check mark highlighted for the headset mic, go to the terminal and enter arecord -d 10 test-mic.wav which should record for 10 seconds. In the past, I have had some headset issues after updates, but to solve that I just had to reconfigure my headphones to "headset" in Waves so that it used the earbud mic instead of the built-in mic. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Realtek Audio (which strangely shows as "Realtek Audio" and not "Realtek HD Audio" in my device manager) and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling an older version, but no luck. And everything became rosy once again: If it does not work in one go, try to fiddle a little bit with default input settings. Step 2: The default input setting was set to Custom.

However, then the volume is way too high for me to handle in my ears. Here is how to solve it: Step 1: Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use the following commands: gstreamer-properties. It also seems like my microphone level might be connected to my volume level - a few people have reported being able to hear me better when I turn my volume all the way up. and even opened up Waves MaxxAudio - all of them can barely pick up my voice. The quick fix would always be to restart the Skype client, and the microphone would work.

The problem was also only affecting Windows 10 users.

I have tried it on multiple apps like Zoom, Skype, the windows camera app, etc. As the problem was not affecting more than a few users it seemed logical that it was related to the client computer itself mainly the headset, the Skype client, some Windows update or a driver issue.
Since then, when I plug in my earbuds (the same standard Apple earbuds that I have been using with this laptop for over a year) I can hear perfectly but my microphone barely registers my voice. After trying it on Cheese and other things listed here and elsewhere, I tried it on the Win 7 Skype and it didn’t work there either. in Ubuntu, video worked fine, mic would not pick up voice on skype test call. Recently, my laptop updated automatically. I thought I’d pass along what solved my problem in installing a Logitech C500 on a Ubuntu/Win7 dual boot laptop.
